YMCA camp program counteracts summer learning skill losses     Send a link to a friend

[JULY 8, 2005]  The Lincoln Area YMCA, together with Mayor Beth Davis, is celebrating National Summer Learning Day on July 14.

Facts about summer learning:

  • All kids experience learning losses during the summer if they are not engaged in educational activities.
  • The greatest areas of loss are in factual and procedural knowledge.
  • Young people who are unsupervised not only drop 2.6 months of grade-level equivalency in math and reading, but are more likely to use alcohol and drugs, engage in criminal and other high-risk behaviors, receive poor grades, and drop out of school.
  • Partnerships between schools and the YMCA can prevent summer loss in reading and math skills,
  • Summer intervention can counteract the cumulative effect of summer loss on reading outcomes.

Mayor Davis will be reading to the K-3 day camp kids from 9:30 to 10 a.m. on Thursday. Although summer day camp highlights "fun in the sun" with the many outdoor camp activities and field trips, the mayor and the YMCA also recognize that learning throughout the summer can be fun, and day camp is a fun way to keep learning and retain skills.

The YMCA will also have a sidewalk art display outside of the office, at 604 Broadway, to show the artwork done at the summer art camp.
