Fish and fun          Send a link to a friend

[JUNE 13, 2005]  Kids had a great time catching fish on Saturday at the D.A.R.E. and Lincoln Park District Fishing Derby. Hickory Lane Campground in Atlanta hosted the event.

"We had about 28 young anglers, and a lot of parents came too," said Roy Logan, Lincoln Park District program manager. Just about everyone caught really nice catfish, he added.

D.A.R.E. gave bicycles to the boy and girl who caught the largest fish. The young people who caught the most and the smallest were given prizes too. Everyone enjoyed hot dogs and sodas provided by D.A.R.E. just prior to the judging. Harrison Turley and Frank Novak served as judges.

This event coincides with National Fishing Week. Illinois recognizes this by offering a "no license needed" weekend when anyone can enjoy the sport of fishing. A fishing license is needed at any other time of the year.

The largest fish caught by a boy was Matthew Brandon's 4-pound catfish, and the girl catching the largest fish was Aspyn Cooper, with a 3-pound catfish. The honors for most fish went to Brandon Miller, with eight fish, and Samantha Garner, who reeled in five. Mackenzie Lock and Tim Parker took honors with the smallest fish.
