[JUNE 18, 2005]  MINIER -- The 2005 Relay For Life of Minier will begin at noon on Saturday, July 9, at Olympia West Park in Minier. The theme for this year's event is "Marga-RELAY-Ville -- No Cancer in Paradise." Highlights include an opening ceremony recognizing area emergency services personnel, a youth lap with balloon launch, survivor celebration featuring honorary survivor and ISU volleyball standout Laura Doornbos, survivor dinner, and luminaria ceremony. Closing ceremonies will be at 5:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 10.

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is a community celebration. The idea is to have fun while raising money to fight cancer and provide services to cancer survivors and their families. Teams of up to 12 people come together to honor cancer survivors and remember those who have died from the disease. Team members walk around a track throughout the night in the hope that cancer will one day be eliminated. Prior to the relay, participants raise a minimum of $100 per person in donations from friends, relatives and employers to support the American Cancer Society.

This is the fourth year for the Minier event, and the fundraising goal is $50,000.

If you'd like to bring a team or would like more information, contact Ann Wheet at 392-2883 or Kathy Farmer at 838-9131.

Relay for Life of Minier is also having an all-team garage sale June 25, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. John's Fellowship Hall, Minier. All items will be sold for a donation to the American Cancer Society. Checks may be made payable to the American Cancer Society, and all of the money donated will go to the Relay For Life of Minier. Refreshments will be available for purchase.

American Cancer Society information is available 24 hours a day at 1 (800) ACS-2345 and www.cancer.org.
