[NOV. 21, 2005]  The Central Illinois Economic Development Corporation works year-round to help the low-income, elderly and disabled in central Illinois. However, as the holiday season and cold weather approaches, CIEDC hits a busy time of year with Toys for Tots and holiday basket distribution.

Partnered with the Marine Corps Reserve, CIEDC is the distribution site for Toys for Tots in Logan County. Any community members or organizations interested in donating new toys for the program can drop them off at CIEDC or any Toys for Tots collection boxes located throughout Logan County.

On Dec. 16, parents who have signed up at corporate headquarters in Lincoln can pick up new toys for their children for the holidays. Any interested parents can contact Kathy Shepherd at CIEDC by calling 732-2159 or visiting CIEDC at 1800 Fifth St.

Holiday baskets have been distributed by CIEDC for over 25 years. This year, families will receive either a holiday gift basket or a gift card for a local grocery store. Several local organizations have offered to sponsor families, and donations are still being accepted by CIEDC.

Income-eligible residents can sign up for a holiday basket by visiting CIEDC corporate headquarters by Dec. 9. Baskets will be distributed Dec. 13 and 14.

Along with holiday basket distribution, approximately 20 families will also have a chance to pick up a free live Christmas tree donated by Graue Chevrolet and the local Kiwanis club.

"Last year, CIEDC served over 600 individuals in Logan County with holiday baskets," said Kathy Shepherd, program director for community services. "We look forward to another successful year in helping our low-income neighbors. We are thankful for all community support for this much-needed service."

CIEDC is a Community Action agency that serves six counties: Logan, DeWitt, Piatt, Fulton, Mason and Menard.
