Super Saturday spider program

The Illinois State Museum's monthly Super Saturday program for youngsters on Oct. 8 is "Spider Secrets -- Silk Threads and Parachutes." The program, for children ages 4-8, offers hands-on activities for youngsters. Parents and other family members are encouraged to participate. The activities are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the museum, located at the corner of Spring and Edwards streets in Springfield. For more information, call the museum at (217) 782-6044.

Giant City Leaf, Bark and Seed Hikes

Come meet the trees in the forest at Giant City State Park in Makanda. The park is hosting Leaf, Bark and Seed Hikes on Oct. 8, 22 and 29. Each hike is from 10 a.m. to noon. Participants will discover why leaves change color and ways to identify trees after leaves fall. Meet at the Giant City Visitor Center for the hikes. Phone (618) 457-4836 for more information.
