Lincoln College volleyball team helps sick teammate

[OCT. 24, 2005]  Lincoln College setter Mackenzie Clark will be getting some support from her teammates on Tuesday at the sophomore night volleyball game. Players will collect donations to help Clark with her medical bills and fight against cancer. The team will also run a 50-50 drawing on Saturday in conjunction with Parent's Weekend at the college.

Clark, the daughter of Frank and Tina Clark of Benton, was recently diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and is currently in a Springfield hospital undergoing treatment. Her mother, Tina Clark, said the diagnosis came at the end of a weeks-long period of pain. Mrs. Clark said her daughter had been sick over the summer with migraines and sinus infections and was in and out of the emergency room.

Lincoln College head volleyball coach Mark Tippett, who is in charge of the donations, says he hopes the Lincoln community will turn out for his team and help the Clark family with medical costs. "We are thankful to anyone who helps, and we are trying to keep a positive attitude on Mackenzie's condition," he said.

Clark played for head volleyball coach Tony Phelps at Benton High School, where she was a member of the Benton team that played in the Elite Eight pairings at the IHSA state tournament in 2001-02 and 2003-04. She also has experience playing club volleyball with the Topsin and SIRRY teams.

Another major fundraiser is set for Nov. 19 at Benton High School with a fish fry, entertainment, volleyball games and an auction planned by players and parents.

An account is being established for donations. If you would like to donate, send your contributions to Benton Volleyball, BCHS, 511 E. Main St., Benton, IL 62812. All money collected will be given to the Clark family.
