Helping evacuees in Houston          Send a link to a friend

Dear friends in Lincoln,

Houston has 150,000-200,000 evacuees from Hurricane Katrina living with relatives or living in shelters. Besides the Astrodome there are numerous Red Cross shelters all over the city. The one closest to me was an amazing sight last night. Cars, trucks and SUVs were lined up packed with goods to leave off. My car was immediately swarmed by teenage volunteers who unloaded it in a matter of seconds. This shelter is housing 200 people. What they told me they are in most desperate need of are $20 gas cards, $10 Wal-Mart cards, phone cards and underwear -- all sizes.

The one we are trying to help is at the Spring Tabernacle. There were 21 more opened just today because so many were at capacity.

See the current list below.

Regards from Houston,

Julie Charette
