Pekin farm offers pumpkins and 'American Gothic' corn maze     Send a link to a friend

[SEPT. 10, 2005]  PEKIN -- Green Acres Farm, just south of Pekin, will begin its season with a grand opening festival on Sunday.

Gates will open at noon and admission will be $5 per car. A portion of the net proceeds will be donated to the T.A.P.S. No-Kill Animal Shelter.

The farm's 12-acre corn maze, which is configured to resemble the "American Gothic" painting, will open at noon. This year is the 75th anniversary of the original painting.

The Morton Chamber of Commerce will help kick off the festivities with a pumpkin vine-cutting ceremony at 1 p.m.

The main event will be a U.S. Lawn Mower Racing Association-sanctioned Illinois points race, which should begin about 1 p.m. and run until 6 p.m. Amateurs are encouraged to enter the open stock racing class. There is a $10 registration fee for racers.

The huge craft barn and Norma Jean's General Store will be open, as well as the 15-acre you-pick pumpkin patch. The farm also sells corn stalks, mums, straw bales, pumpkins and ornamental gourds. Other activities will be pet adoptions from T.A.P.S., inflatable rides by Fun Services, a live remote broadcast by WXCL from noon to 2 p.m., music all day and plenty of food.
