[SEPT. 28, 2005]  SPRINGFIELD -- Capt. Dennis Sloman, Illinois State Police District 9 commander, is proud to announce District 9's first-place finish in the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police 2004 Traffic Safety Challenge.

The Traffic Safety Challenge award is based on policy and procedures, officer training, safety education and public information, enforcement of traffic laws, and overall effectiveness of the previous four categories in saving lives.

District 9 provided its 2004 traffic fatality record and programs as evidence of success with traffic safety. In 2004 the number of fatalities within District 9 was 35 percent lower than the previous five-year average.

Sloman attended an awards ceremony Aug. 18 in Chicago during which District 9 was presented with a first-place trophy for its efforts. The district was also recognized with honorable mention in the Rookie of the Year category, the first time such an award had been presented by the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police. During the ceremony Sloman publicly praised his employees for their dedication to duty and applauded their continued efforts at improving traffic safety.
