Lincoln woman takes first in Abe's Amble   Send a link to a friend

[AUG. 22, 2006]  SPRINGFIELD -- The 2006 Illinois State Fair concluded on Sunday with Abe's Amble and ARCA auto racing.

Hometown favorite Justin Allgaier held off defending champion Frank Kimmel on the final lap to win the Allen Crowe Memorial 100 on Sunday at the state fair.

Starting from the third position, Allgaier, of Springfield, edged Kimmel by seven-tenths of a second in the ARCA Re/Max Series race, avenging a loss to the Clarksville, Ind., native by a nearly identical margin a year ago.

The last lap was the only lap Allgaier led all afternoon. His winning time was 72.072 mph. Mark Gibson of Winder, Ga., finished third. Bob Strait, of Mokena was fourth after leading the race for 42 of the final 43 laps.

Despite an eighth-place finish, pole-sitter Damon Lusk made track history by breaking the record qualifying time with a speed of 107.778 mph. Allgaier formerly held the record, earning the pole position last year with a speed of 107.710 mph.

Abe's Amble results

Bryan Glass of Springfield won the Abe's Amble men's 10K, a cross country race sponsored by the Springfield Road Runners Club. Glass completed the course, which starts and finishes on the Illinois State Fairgrounds, in 32 minutes, 16 seconds, 32 seconds, ahead of runner-up Adam White of Peoria. Kelly Fox of Lincoln crossed the finish line in 38:20 to win the women's division. Collen Casey was second.

Jordan Wolf, 17, of Rockton won the 2K race, finishing ahead of runner-up Wes Wooden of Springfield by 11 seconds. Wolf's winning time was 6:45. Brittany Rogers, 15, of Lincoln won the women's 2K race with a time of 7:19. Katie McAfee of Pawnee was second.
