DATELINE -- As anticipated, with the 2005
figures released by the Agricultural Statistics Service, Logan
County fell from the lofty corn yield plateau established the past
two years. The Logan County corn yield was established at 144
bushels per acre. This figure was 30 percent shy of the 188 bushels
per acre achieved in 2004 and the record corn yield established in
2003 with 189 bushels per acre. The Logan County 10-year average for
corn yields is 160 bushels per acre (1996-2005).

The top-yielding corn counties in the state were Christian
County at 181 bushels per acre, Macon at 175, Moultrie with 172,
Piatt at 171 and Sangamon with 169. Soybean yields dropped
slightly from 2004 levels, with a 2005 Logan County average of
53 bushels per acre. The 2004 average yield was 56 bushels per
acre. The 53-bushel average is the second-highest on record,
with the 2004 crop being the highest yielding. The Logan County
10-year soybean yield average is 48.65 bushels per acre.
The top-yielding county in the state for soybeans was once
again Carroll County, at 57 bushels per acre. Carroll County was
followed by Piatt and DeWitt counties with 56-bushel averages.
Next were McLean, Macon, Champaign and Moultrie counties with
54-bushel yields.

For total production in bushels, the top-producing county was
McLean County, producing 56,897,400 bushels of corn and 14,158,800
bushels of soybeans. Logan County production was 29,059,200 bushels
of corn and 7,441,200 bushels of soybeans.
