PEORIA -- Due to this weekend's developments
with the U.S. House Republican leadership, U.S. Rep. Ray LaHood,
R-Peoria, announced Sunday that he will not be participating in a
scheduled 12-day congressional delegation trip to India, Thailand,
Vietnam and Singapore. LaHood was to join Speaker Dennis Hastert and
nine other House members for the trip. Hastert also will not be
going, though other members will continue.

"I have spoken with the speaker's staff and I decided that,
given this weekend's developments concerning congressman DeLay,
there will be much happening over the next few weeks before Congress
convenes at the end of January. It would be all but impossible to
stay on top of leadership developments and have input into the
process while being overseas, so I believe it would be best not to
participate," LaHood said. LaHood now plans to be in Illinois for
the next few weeks and will travel to Capitol Hill when the House
convenes the week of Jan. 30 for the second session of the 109th
Congress.
