[JAN. 17, 2006]  CHICAGO -- On the day before his annual State of the State address, Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich was scheduled to join Mayor Richard M. Daley, state and local elected officials, and advocates against gun violence to renew their call for a statewide assault weapons ban. The federal ban on assault weapons was allowed to expire more than a year ago, prompting Illinois lawmakers to propose a bill that would ban the manufacture, possession and delivery of semiautomatic assault weapons, assault weapon attachments, large-capacity ammunition feeding devices and the .50 caliber assault rifle.

Among those planning to join the governor and mayor at a noon rally at a Chicago police station were state Sen. John Cullerton, D-Chicago; state Rep. Edward Acevedo, D-Chicago; Alderman Ike Carothers, D-29th; Douglas Brown, first deputy director of the Illinois State Police; Jennifer Bishop of the Brady campaign; and Thom Mannard from the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence.
