Troopers' CPR saves motorcyclist after highway crash

[JULY 17, 2006]  SPRINGFIELD -- An Illiopolis woman, Sheila M. Thompson, 38, was taken to Memorial Medical Center following a motorcycle crash at 2:38 p.m. on Saturday.

Thompson was northbound on Illinois Route 29, taking the on-ramp to Interstate 55 northbound. According to witnesses, she took her eyes off the roadway to check on another motorcycle she was traveling with and lost control. Her motorcycle left the east side of the roadway, striking the embankment. She was thrown from the motorcycle and came to rest in the ditch.

Troopers responding to the scene administered CPR and were able to open her airway and regain a pulse. Her condition was unknown at the time of this report.

Assisting at the scene were Illinois State Police, Springfield Area Ambulance and Springfield Fire Department.
