[JUNE 12, 2006]  SPRINGFIELD -- Incident: Suspicious object

Location: 2000 Block of Greenbriar Road, Springfield

Date, time: June 11, 11:30 a.m.

People involved: Illinois State Police officer

Assisting agencies: Secretary of State Police bomb squad, Sangamon County Sheriff's Office, Leland Grove Police Department, Springfield Fire Department, Springfield Area Ambulance

Narrative: On Sunday at approximately 11:30 a.m., an Illinois State Police officer observed a suspicious object inside the tailpipe of his unmarked squad car, which was parked at his residence in the 2000 block of Greenbriar Drive, Springfield.

Illinois State Police with the assistance of the Sangamon County Sheriff's Office and Leland Grove Police Department secured a perimeter near the officer's residence. The Illinois Secretary of State Police bomb squad responded to the scene and used a remote-controlled robotic device to remove the suspicious object. Further investigation of the object revealed it not to be an explosive device.

The area was open to residents and traffic at approximately 2 p.m.

The Illinois State Police Crime Scene Services and State Police Investigations are continuing the investigation.
