Area escapes major damage in weekend storms          Send a link to a friend

[JUNE 19, 2006]  Scattered thunderstorms moved through the area on both Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Just as many people sat down to eat their barbecue with family and friends in the backyard on Saturday, large raindrops began to fall. This escalated to a brief downpour in many areas. Some wind gusts and lightning were reported with these scattered storms that came out of the southwest.

The action began a few hours earlier on Sunday. Again scattered storms passed through areas of Logan County, dumping anywhere from 1.5 inches of much-needed rain to a scarce one-tenth inch, Logan County Emergency Management Agency director Dan Fulscher said. The rains fell in a half-hour, creating temporary flooding the usual places in Lincoln: Eighth and Elm streets, Fifth Street, and the Route 66 railroad viaduct. A home in the 800 block of North Sherman was flooded.

One lightning strike was reported, affecting the 911 center at the Verizon office.

A possible funnel cloud sighting turned out to be a low-hanging scud cloud.

The National Weather Service reported that heavier rains fell east of Lincoln, causing small-stream and road flooding. Clinton was reported to have received from 1.5 to 3 inches of rain in one hour.
