[JUNE 27, 2006]  CHICAGO -- The Horseman's Voice on Tuesday officially marks the fight with international drug manufacturer Amgen in light of two doping scandals in the Standardbred horse racing industry. Amgen, a publicly traded company in the United States, manufactures the drugs Epogen and Aranesp at their manufacturing plant in Longwood, Colo., with distributors located across the United States.

The Horseman's Voice is providing links via the Internet for the entire world to see firsthand the depth of these scandals, which are bigger in scope than the Olympic cycling doping scandal with Epogen a few years ago. In communication with Amgen directly, The Horseman's Voice was misled in believing that brochures and CDs would be delivered in anticipation of developing educational materials for the entire horse racing industry. Only the following link was sent referring to the Olympic cycling doping scandal: www.horsemansvoice.com/Anti-Doping2-9D.pdf. [To download Adobe Acrobat Reader for the PDF file, click here.]

Amgen's associate director for corporate public relations responded to requests from The Horseman's Voice to work in unison by stating on behalf on Amgen on May 26:

"Thank you for contacting Amgen regarding your concerns about doping in horse racing. We appreciate your invitation to address the Illinois Racing Board and to develop educational materials specifically targeted to the horse racing industry, but must decline, as we are not staffed to respond to requests of this nature.

"Amgen discovers and develops innovative and vital human therapeutics that over the years have helped millions of patients in the fight against cancer, kidney disease and other serious illnesses. Amgen is committed to combating inappropriate use of its vital medicines and educating about the potential dangers of misusing drugs of any kind, and will continue to collaborate closely with national and international organizations to help develop effective tests to detect doping.

"Thank you, again, for your inquiry, and for understanding why we must decline."

The Horseman's Voice says that the actions and answers by this multibillion-dollar worldwide corporation are not sufficient to the challenges the horse racing industry is now facing in reference to these scandals.

Eric M. Poders, publisher of The Horseman's Voice and animal rights activist, stated: "We challenge all media practitioners, horse racing jurisdictions, racing commissions, racetrack management, animal activists/purists/lovers and even the fans of the sport internationally to put pressure on this company NOW, as we need to get Amgen to show their distribution records for the drugs Epogen and Aranesp, especially how their numbers have dropped from certain wholesalers and/or distributors since these scandals broke."

The Horseman's Voice is an international online media outlet as well as a facilitator of information in the Standardbred (harness) racing industry. For more information, contact publisher Eric M. Poders at 1 (847) 530-2222 or publisher@horsemansvoice.com.
