[JUNE 30, 2006]  Steak n Shake split a doubleheader with Mount Pulaski 1 on Thursday evening, losing the first game 11-9 but coming out on top in the second game, 6-4.

In the first game, Steak n Shake fell behind 6-3 before battling back to take an 8-6 lead, only to give the lead away in the end.

Justin Jenkins pitched a complete game. Brandon Chrisman, Zach Toft, Tanner Smith, Derrick Grieser, Alex Schonauer and Kenton McIntosh had hits for Steak n Shake.

For Mount Pulaski, Andrew McCarty had two hits, one being a triple, and Steven Mulkins reached base all four times he batted, including an inside-the-park home run.

In the nightcap, Zach Toft was responsible for a majority of Steak n Shake’s runs, with two hits, one an inside-the-park home run to put the team on top for good. He had three RBIs as well as a run scored. Conner McQuellon and Garrett Cooper also had hits. But, defense made the difference in the second game, as Cooper, from behind the plate, threw out two runners attempting to steal. Smith was the winning pitcher.
