Prison hostage situation brought to an end          Send a link to a friend

[MAY 13, 2006]  DIXON -- At approximately 1:45 p.m. Friday the hostage situation at Dixon Correctional Center came to a peaceful end. The inmate and staff member received no injuries. The inmate is in custody of the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Department of Corrections hostage negotiators had communicated with the inmate since 12:45 p.m. Thursday. The inmate cooperated with the negotiators throughout this time period. The expertise of the department's negotiation team should be credited for ending this situation peacefully.

The investigative process is now under way, with the ultimate goal of bringing prosecution to the fullest.

The staff member is being treated by medical staff with precautionary measures.

The Illinois Department of Corrections appreciates everyone's patience and cooperation during this time, which helped negotiators accomplish a peaceful ending.

Note: Dixon Correctional Center remains on lockdown status until further notice.

Dixon Correctional Center has an inmate population of 2,201 of adult male offenders and staff head count of 635. Dixon Correctional Center is a Level 3 medium-high-security facility.
