To the editor:
After we compared the essential qualities needed to
be an effective sheriff between our present sheriff, Steve Nichols,
and his former employee and now opponent, Jerry Melton, it became
very clear that Sheriff Steve Nichols would once again be our choice
for the very important job of Logan County sheriff.
Regarding education, Sheriff Steve Nichols has a
bachelor's degree, while his opponent, Jerry Melton, has only
completed high school. Regarding law enforcement training, Sheriff
Steve Nichols received his training from the State Police Academy,
while his opponent, Jerry Melton, received his training from his
work mates in rural Logan County. Regarding law enforcement
experience, Sheriff Steve Nichols received his experience as an
officer with the state police for several years, while his opponent,
Jerry Melton, received his experience only in rural Logan County.

The job of sheriff also requires strong
administrative skills, such as preparing an annual budget, managing
and being responsible for the operation of the Logan County
Courthouse, managing the Logan County Jail, as well as managing the
day-to-day operations of the sheriff's office. Sheriff Steve Nichols
has four years' experience performing the job duties just described,
while his opponent, Jerry Melton, has no administrative experience
and no other job experience that included multitask requirements of
any kind, and especially no experience as a sheriff
We are now asking all qualified Logan County voters
to join us in voting for the only truly qualified candidate for
sheriff of Logan County, Steve Nichols.
