[OCT. 10, 2006]  The public is invited to the ribbon-cutting in Lincoln at noon on Oct. 18 for the inaugural run of additional train services provided by Amtrak for the Chicago-St. Louis route. The Lincoln/Logan County Chamber of Commerce will conduct the ribbon-cutting ceremony with numerous community leaders and dignitaries on hand. The ceremony will take place at the Amtrak stop located at the Lincoln Depot, 101 N. Chicago St.

The new rail service will be in place later this month. According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, the St. Louis-Chicago corridor will have five daily round trips featuring four new trains. Three of these trains will make daily stops in Lincoln. The purpose of the new trains is to help Illinoisans deal with high gas prices and satisfy the increasing demand for rail travel. This is part of a program that will operate eight new trains on three different routes between Chicago and 28 downstate cities.

For more information about the new train routes, check Amtrak.com or call 1-800-USA-RAIL (1-800-872-7245). For more information regarding the ribbon-cutting ceremony, contact the Abraham Lincoln Tourism Bureau of Logan County at 217-732-8687 or tourism@lincolnlogan.com.
