[SEPT. 12, 2006]  SPRINGFIELD -- The Springfield Community Orchestra, under the direction of Richard Haglund, will begin rehearsals this week for the 2006-2007 season. The group is open to any adult who plays an orchestral instrument. There will be no auditions, and community musicians of all skill levels are encouraged to participate. The first rehearsal is from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Hoogland Center for the Performing Arts, 420 S. Sixth.

The inaugural season of the Sangamon Valley Community Orchestra, 2005-2006, included a performance featuring Dvorak's Symphony No. 9 "New World" (2nd and 4th movements), Howard Hanson's "Nordic" Symphony (2nd movement), Mendelssohn's Chorale from Symphony No. 5 "Reformation," Borodine's "Steps of Central Asia," Leroy Anderson's "Song of the Bells," Mozart's Aria from "Don Giovanni" and "Laurie's Song" from Aaron Copland's "Tender Land."

There is no charge to participate in the community orchestra. Donations will be accepted to offset the costs of the rehearsal space and conductor.
