Fires keep area departments busy

[April 25, 2007]  Five other departments assisted Elkhart firemen when a fire was reported at the Davis Truck Company at 7:40 Wednesday morning. The structure has a wood frame front with metal over it. The building sustained major damage but is still standing.

Fortunately, the fire could be contained mostly to the west end of the building, away from the only major contents, a backhoe and some new tires. The new owner, Jerry Davis, had just cleaned out the building last week.

Supporting Elkhart were Mount Pulaski, Cornland, Middletown, Broadwell and Lincoln Rural fire departments.

City of Lincoln Fire Chief James Davis announced at Tuesday night's city council meeting a plan to stop a fire that began on Sunday at the city's Olsen Landfill. He and Lincoln Street Superintendent Tracy Jackson determined that they will be reorganizing the one mound into smaller separated piles.

The landfill will remain closed until the fire is out.
