[August 02, 2007]  SPRINGFIELD -- The rousing music of a Civil War regimental band will fill downtown Springfield during a free concert scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday in Union Square Park, adjacent to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum.

The 10th Illinois Volunteer Cavalry Regiment Band is a re-creation of the original brass band that accompanied the regiment during the Civil War. The regiment was from the Sangamon, Logan and Christian County areas and was mustered into service in 1861 at Camp Butler. Today's band members are from those same counties and play music from that period on original and reproduction instruments.

The 10th Cavalry Regiment Band is under the direction of Todd Cranson, band and chamber orchestra director at the University of Illinois at Springfield, and is an affiliated musical ensemble with UIS Music. The band will also present a concert at the Aug. 7 flag-lowering ceremony at Lincoln Tomb in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
