Blood drives in Lincoln

[August 03, 2007]  SPRINGFIELD -- Ah, summer time is here. There is more sunshine, more time to relax, more fun outside and, yes, a bigger demand for blood. Historically, blood usage is up and donations are down in the summer. People are traveling and busy with their families, and since high schools are closed, there is limited participation from students, who provide about 15 percent of the blood supply annually.

You have two upcoming opportunities to save someone's life by donating blood with CICBC. The routine community blood drive will be on Monday at the Lincoln Masonic Center, 2022 N. Kickapoo St. in Lincoln, from noon until 6 p.m. This blood drive is sponsored by Lincoln Christian Church. On Wednesday, Faith Lutheran Church, 2320 N. Kickapoo St. in Lincoln, is hosting a blood drive from noon until 5 p.m. Please call Tara to sign up toll-free at 1-866-GIVE-BLD, ext. 56, or schedule an appointment online at www.cicbc.org (Monday appointments; Wednesday appointments). Walk-ins are always welcome and appreciated.

The 2007-2008 Springfield Clinic High School Blood Challenge started May 12. Donate blood in support of Lincoln High School or a high school in your community participating in the challenge, and should they win the challenge, a graduating senior will receive a $1,000 college scholarship. Until Aug. 20, all donations will give double credit to their mentioned high school, and all donors will be entered into a drawing. A winner will be drawn for an iPod Nano.

Please give what's in your heart. Donate blood.
