[August 04, 2007]  (AP) Moist air that has brought rain to parts of the Southeast and Gulf Coast will begin to taper off Saturday, but showers and thunderstorms will persist for at least a day.

A cold front is expected to push through the Northeast to the Atlantic Ocean, bringing morning showers and thunderstorms to parts of the region that are expected to decrease by afternoon. The front should bring cooler air to the region by Sunday.

A low pressure system will move through the northern Plains toward the upper Mississippi Valley, bringing heavy rain and thunderstorms to an area stretching from the Dakotas to the Ohio Valley.

Thunderstorms are also likely in parts of the Southwest and Great Basin, especially in the afternoon.

Temperatures in the Southeast are expected to be in the 90s and 100s, while the Northeast and Northwest should get temperatures in the 70s and 80s. In the Plains, temperatures should rise into the 90s.

Temperatures in the lower 48 states Friday ranged from a low of 31 degrees at Chemult, Ore., to a high of 119 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
