The Illinois Lincoln Bicentennial Commission had a workshop Aug. 2
in Springfield to encourage and assist Illinois communities in
developing their unique commemorations of Abraham Lincoln's 200th
birthday. Representatives from Lincoln participated in the workshop,
which featured presentations including "Why We Should Celebrate
Lincoln's Bicentennial," "How to Maximize Your Bicentennial
Planning," "Lincoln in Illinois" and a panel discussion by the
Illinois Community Bicentennial Committee.
"The state of Illinois has a tremendous opportunity to pay homage
to our favorite son during 2008 and 2009," said Marilyn Kushak,
chairwoman of the state commission. "We are delighted that the city
of Lincoln is going to bring that celebration to a local level."
Lincoln is planning Heritage Days for July 2008, a September 2009
Railsplitting Festival, and many other activities and projects to
celebrate the bicentennial. The Illinois Lincoln Bicentennial
Commission's online site, www.lincoln200.net, will feature
information about local activities once those plans are in place.
