[August 10, 2007]  (AP) Forecasters predicted heavy rain in the New York City area and triple-digit temperatures in the South on Friday, while clear, mild conditions were in store for much of the West Coast. The city might escape the worst rain in the region, however, which is expected north of the Catskills and western Connecticut, where more than 3 inches of rain is possible.

Conditions in the South were expected to be hot, with triple-digit heat expected in parts.

The Plains were also expected to feel the heat, when temperatures are forecast to reach into the lower hundreds across much of the region.

Temperatures in the Northeast will be considerably cooler, with highs in some parts of New England barely breaching 70.

In the West, clear skies were expected, except for a few thunderstorms in Colorado and New Mexico. The Northwest is expected to get a drizzle and light rain.

Temperatures in the lower 48 states Thursday ranged from a low of 32 degrees at Stanley, Idaho, to a high of 114 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
