State
disaster declaration will help area get assistance needed to speed
recovery efforts
[August 27, 2007]
SPRINGFIELD -- On Sunday, Gov.
Rod R. Blagojevich declared DeKalb County a state disaster area due
to flooding and severe storms that have caused widespread damage.
The state disaster declaration makes available a wide variety of
state resources that can help affected communities in DeKalb County
recover from flood and storm-related damage.

"Hundreds of people in DeKalb County have been forced from their
flood-damaged homes in DeKalb County, and students in a dorm at
Northern Illinois University have been displaced after their dorm
was flooded," Blagojevich said. "The state has been working closely
with local emergency management officials to assess their needs for
assistance, and this state disaster declaration will ensure DeKalb
County gets what they need to help hard-hit communities protect
public safety and speed the recovery process." The state of
Illinois has personnel and assets that can be mobilized to help
local government officials with disaster recovery, including such
things as trucks, heavy equipment and work crews to speed debris
removal, and assistance with security and other public safety
issues.
Blagojevich previously declared Cook, DuPage, Lake, Kane and
McHenry counties state disaster areas to help those areas respond to
and recover from flooding and storm damage.
The governor also has directed the Illinois Emergency Management
Agency to continue working with local emergency management officials
throughout northern Illinois as communities deal with floodwaters
and the aftermath of several severe storms.
