Fatal Accident on Route 121 at Latham

[December 06, 2007]  SPRINGFIELD -- A crash on Route 121 at Latham led to the death of a yet-to-be-identified woman on Wednesday. The single-vehicle crash occurred after her vehicle left the roadway for unknown reason.

The woman was driving a black 2005 Chevrolet TrailBlazer southbound on Route 121, west of Fourth Street in Latham, at 1:52 p.m.

The vehicle left the south side of the roadway and began to spin counterclockwise. It struck a signpost before striking a concrete culvert with the front passenger side tire. The vehicle then began to overturn, rolling 2 1/2 times before coming to rest.

The driver was ejected from the vehicle.

She was transported to Decatur Memorial Hospital with life-threatening injuries. She died shortly after arriving at the hospital.

The Illinois State Police are investigating the crash. Assisting at scene were the Logan County Sheriff's Department, Logan County EMS and Mount Pulaski Rescue.

Further information is pending a news release by Macon County Coroner Michael Day.
