[December 17, 2007]  (AP) Lingering snow continued falling across the Northeast early Monday as a powerful nor'easter slips off the coast. As one storm moves out of the country, another will enter the nation in the Northwest.

Maine could see snow linger into the afternoon as the wintry blast lingers over the Canadian Maritimes. Elsewhere, snow will generally be limited to the shores of the Great Lakes and some small pockets in the Northeast.

Temperatures in the Northeast will remain cold, bringing treacherous, icy driving conditions to Monday morning's commute. The southern Mid-Atlantic could see a dramatic mercury drop, with temperatures in Virginia and the Carolinas dropping up to 15 degrees.

A strong Pacific low pressure system was expected to slide into the Canadian Northwest, sending a front into Washington and Oregon. Heavy rain was forecast at the coast, and snow was expected above 1,500 feet.

Heavy rain was expected to stay to the north of the Bay Area. Late in the day, snow could reach the Sierra Nevada, dropping a few inches on some of the ski resorts around Lake Tahoe.

In the interior West, high pressure was forecast to remain in place ahead of the storm front, leaving generally clear skies across the region.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Sunday ranged from a low of minus 22 degrees at Alamosa, Colo., to a high of 83 degrees at Miami, Fla.
