[December 20, 2007]  (AP) Widespread rain and mountain snow were expected in the West on Thursday, while heavy rain and thunderstorms were expected in the Southeast and snow in New England.

A cold front was expected to sweep through the Northwest and northern Rockies, while pushing southeastward through California and portions of the Great Basin. The system was expected to bring rain and, in mountainous areas, snow.

Winter weather warnings were in effect throughout the region, with more than a foot of snow on tap for the Sierra Nevadas, the mountains of Idaho and the Cascades. A foot of snow was also likely in the northern Rockies as the system moves inland. Rain was likely in California.

In the Plains and Mississippi Valley, heavy rain and thunderstorms were expected as the system moves into the Southeast. Severe thunderstorms were possible in the lower Mississippi Valley.

Over a half-foot of snow was expected in parts of inland New England, with rain closer to the coast.

Temperatures in the Northeast were expected to reach no more than the 30s, while the Southeast was expected to rise into the 60s and 70s.

The Great Lakes and upper Midwest were expecting temperatures in the 20s and 30s, and the Northwest was expecting temperatures in the 30s and 40s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a low of minus 20 degrees at Presque Isle, Maine, to a high of 87 degrees at McAllen, Texas.
