Chicago Architecture Foundation Announces Winter Events and Tours

[December 29, 2007]  CHICAGO -- The Chicago Architecture Foundation announces events and tours scheduled for January, February and March:

New this season:
  • Map This! Envisioning a Global City -- Opens Jan. 10

  • Lego model of the Sears Tower -- Through Jan. 31 in the Arcelor-Mittal City Space Gallery

  • Do We Dare Squander Chicago's Great Architectural Heritage? -- Opens Feb. 7

Devil in the White City tours added

All previous tours have sold out, so reservations are required. Fridays and Sundays at 10:30 a.m. New dates: Jan. 11, Feb. 8, Feb. 24, March 14

  • Map This! Envisioning a Global City -- The Chicago Architecture Foundations joins 30 other cultural institutions for the city of Chicago's Festival of Maps with this new exhibition running Jan. 10-March 21.

  • Do We Dare Squander Chicago's Great Architectural Heritage? -- Open Feb. 7- May 9, this exhibition examines the role of historic preservation in Chicago and the motivation of its proponents.

  • Chicago: You Are Here -- This engaging permanent exhibition at the Chicago Architecture Foundation includes a scale model of downtown Chicago, along with images, artifacts and video presentations, encouraging visitors to explore the architecture, infrastructure and environment of Chicago.

Tours:

A sample of some of the Chicago Architecture Foundation's 80-plus tours!

  • Architecture River Cruise -- A 90-minute cruise narrated by well-trained volunteer docents. The boats provide a new perspective on the city, cruising by Chicago's soaring towers, identifying more than 50 architecturally significant sites. Season begins in May.

Bus tours:

  • Highlights by Bus -- The exciting diversity of Chicago's finest buildings are part of this wide-ranging odyssey. The tour features an interior tour of Frank Lloyd Wright's Robie House; covers 30 miles of Chicago architecture including the Loop, Hyde Park, the Gold Coast, several historic districts, university campuses, parks and residential neighborhoods. Stops include Mies van der Rohe's IIT campus and the Rookery in downtown Chicago. The interior tour of the Robie House is given by the Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust. Wednesdays and Saturdays at 9:30 a.m.

  • Devil in the White City -- This compelling bus tour is based upon Erik Larson's best-selling novel that chronicles the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition and the emergence of America's first mass murderer. Dates: Jan. 11, Feb. 8, Feb. 24 and March 14 at 10:30 a.m.

Downtown walking tours:

  • Historic Skyscrapers -- Daily, 10 a.m.

  • Modern Skyscrapers -- Daily, 1 p.m.

  • Architecture of Culture and Commerce -- Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 2 p.m.

  • Downtown Deco -- Thursdays and Saturdays, 11 a.m.

  • Tiffany on Wednesdays -- Wednesdays, 3 p.m.
