Who Won the Lincoln-Douglas Debates?

Author of New Book on America's Most Famous Political Debates to Speak and Sign Books Feb. 11

[December 29, 2007]  SPRINGFIELD -- "Who Won the Lincoln-Douglas Debates?" Dr. Allen C. Guelzo, author of the newest book on this famous political discourse, will offer his insight during a discussion and book signing Feb. 11 at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield. The 150th anniversary of the 1858 debates will be commemorated across the state during 2008.

The luncheon and discussion will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library Multi-Purpose Room. Tickets are $20 each, which includes lunch, and are available now. They may be purchased at www.alplm.org or by calling 217-558-8934.

The book signing is free and open to the public. It will be from 10 to 11 a.m. in the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum Store. Copies of Guelzo's books will be available for purchase.

Guelzo is the Henry R. Luce Professor of the Civil War Era and director of Civil War Era Studies at Gettysburg College. He is the author of "Lincoln and Douglas: The Debates That Defined America (2008)"; "Abraham Lincoln: Redeemer President" (1999); and "Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation: The End of Slavery in America" (2004).

The Feb. 11 discussion and book signing are part of the presidential library and museum's observance of Abraham Lincoln's 199th birthday. Other scheduled events include children's activities and "Tea with Mrs. Keckly" on Feb. 9; a theatrical performance, "Frederick Douglass & Abraham Lincoln: A Friendship Unique," on Feb. 12; and "Lincoln, Lore and Legends" Trivia Night on Feb. 15.
