[December 31, 2007]  (AP) Snow was expected to blanket the Northeast Monday, with the heaviest accumulations in southern Vermont, where the total depth will be less than a foot.

Skies will be clear in the Southeast but become cloudier up the East Coast.

The northeast snowfall should taper off by afternoon as the storm moves northeast into the Canadian Maritimes, but a few snow showers may develop over the Plains and Midwest.

The trough over the heartland was expected to extend to the Rockies, adding to snow across Montana and northern Idaho and bringing cloud cover to the southern Rockies.

The West Coast will have dry weather, but another strong storm will pound the northwest late in the week.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Sunday ranged from a low of minus 27 degrees at Alamosa, Colo., to a high of 86 degrees at Okeechobee, Fla.
