Three-time national motorcycle champion Bart Markel dies          Send a link to a friend

[FEB. 6, 2007]  Bart Markel, the legendary motorcycle racer who won the AMA Grand National Championship three times in the 1960s, died Saturday at his home in Flint, Mich. (See obituary on AMA Flat Track Championship site.)

"Black Bart" Markel was watched by thousands of fans in this area and was one of their favorites, according to AMA writer Tor Kovacs.

Markel won these locally contested Grand National Championship races during his career:

  • Lincoln Half-mile, 1962

  • Springfield Mile, 1962

  • Peoria TT, 1960, '61, '62, '63, '65, '68

  • Hinsdale Santa Fe Speedway Short Track National, 1966, '70
