The
30 to 45 mph wind gusts that blew through Logan County on Tuesday
swept patches of fields, yards and roads clean, then deposited the
new-fallen snow in most strategically annoying places. Drifting
disrupted travel or even movement out the front door anywhere and
everywhere.
Snowplows ran all day at the Logan County Airport northeast of
Lincoln. By sundown the runway and all taxiways were clear, with
some scattered slick spots remaining.
The tower to the left is a historic rotating beacon that alternates
green and white light. The beacon is automated when dusk falls or
when visibility becomes less than five statute miles, supplying a
visual cue for airport location for aircraft.
The Logan County Airport beacon was part of the lighted airway
system route from St. Louis to Chicago. This was on the route that
Charles Lindbergh flew as an airmail pilot.
