[July 19, 2007]  (AP) A high pressure system pushing south from Canada will bring drier conditions to the northern Plains and cooler air to the Great Lakes region on Thursday.

The front will likely bring showers and thunderstorms to the central Plains, middle Mississippi Valley, Appalachians and parts of the Northeast.

In the West, a dying Pacific front is expected to move through the northern Rockies, bringing little rain but slightly cooler temperatures, easing fire worries somewhat.

Parts of the Southwest could experience scattered afternoon showers and thunderstorms.

Temperatures in the Southeast are expected to rise into the 90s, while the Northeast and Northwest will likely see temperatures in the 70s and 80s. Temperatures in the Plains are likely to be in the 80s and 90s, while the Southwest should see temperatures in the 90s and 100s.

Temperatures in the lower 48 states Wednesday ranged from a low of 38 degrees at West Yellowstone, Mont., to a high of 117 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
