SPRINGFIELD -- Fire department
personnel from 24 communities are attending a workshop in
Springfield on Saturday where they will receive computers, software
and training that will improve their ability to report and record
vital information about fires and other incidents. The equipment and
training are provided at no cost to the fire departments by the
Office of the State Fire Marshal. The workshop is from 10 a.m. to 3
p.m. at the OSFM headquarters, 1035 Stevenson Drive in Springfield.

The National Fire Incident Reporting System is an electronic system
designed to help fire departments report and maintain computerized
records of fires and other incidents in a uniform manner. It was
developed by the U.S. Fire Administration in partnership with the
National Fire Information Council to simplify reporting and enable
the fire service to examine trends on a local, state and national
level, to help reduce loss of life and property. "The information
collected through the NFIRS systems is very important because it
helps us evaluate fire incidents and determine how best to focus our
resources and efforts to help save lives," said State Fire Marshal
David Foreman. "But for this information to be most useful, we need
every fire department to report. Unfortunately many departments
can't afford to buy the computers and software needed. I'm pleased
that we're able to help them get what they need."
The National Fire Incident Reporting System enables fire
departments to collect data on a full range of fire department
activities, including structure fires, civilian and fire service
casualties, emergency medical services, hazardous materials, wild
land fires, apparatus, personnel, and arson and juvenile fire
setters.
More than 500 fire departments previously received the computers,
software and training. Fire departments interested in the training
can contact Vicki Fraase, OSFM, at 217-558-0325 or
Vicki.Fraase@illinois.gov.
