[July 28, 2007]  SPRINGFIELD -- The Illinois Symphony Orchestra assistant conductor and Sangamon Valley Youth Symphony music director recently returned from Eastern Europe, where he led four concerts in Romania and Bulgaria. Richard Haglund was invited to conduct the orchestras of the Timisoara Philharmonic and Cluj Camerata in Romania and the Gabrovo Chamber Orchestra and Pleven Philharmonic in Bulgaria.

All four concerts featured American composers, and several performances featured special guests. The Cluj Camerata welcomed Illinois Symphony Orchestra clarinetist Sunshine Simmons to perform the Copland Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra. The Gabrovo Chamber Orchestra featured violinist Michael Antonello performing "Suite Hebraïque" by Ernest Bloch, and Antonello also performed Beethoven's Violin Concerto with the Pleven Philharmonic. Both Antonello's performances featured him playing on one of the world's finest Stradivarius violins.

"The experience was outstanding," says Haglund, "Even with language barriers, we can all communicate with music. Perhaps this is a lesson for the world getting along." Haglund led four concerts, 12 rehearsals, had numerous press conferences and was featured on Bulgarian television for nearly an hour.

He is now entering his fifth year as assistant conductor of the Illinois Symphony Orchestra and music director of the Sangamon Valley Youth Symphony.
