Thursday conference will prepare communities to celebrate the 16th president's 200th birthday

[July 31, 2007]  SPRINGFIELD -- A good birthday party requires a lot of planning, especially when the party is for one of world history's most well-known figures.

The Illinois Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission will host a Community Planning Conference on Thursday to encourage and assist Illinois communities in developing their unique commemorations of Abraham Lincoln's 200th birthday. The conference will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library, 112 N. Sixth St. in downtown Springfield.

The conference will feature the following topics and speakers:

  • "Why We Should Celebrate Lincoln's Bicentennial," presented by Thomas F. Schwartz, Illinois state historian

  • "An Evening With President and Mrs. Lincoln"

  • "How to Maximize Your Bicentennial Planning," presented by Carolyn Brackett, National Trust for Historic Preservation

  • "Lincoln in Illinois," presented by Bryon Andreasen, Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum historian

  • Illinois Community Bicentennial Committee panel discussion with panelists Ron Keller, Lincoln Bicentennial Commission; Sue Richter, Danville Bicentennial Committee; Kathy Zimmerman, Pittsfield Bicentennial Commission; Bob Lenz, Bloomington Bicentennial Committee; James Reed, Menard County Bicentennial Committee

  • Create and share bicentennial event ideas

The Illinois Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission, formed by Gov. Rod Blagojevich in February 2006, is working closely with the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, tourism agencies, and many other institutions and organizations to organize events and programming beginning in 2008. The commission is also partnering with local communities on their bicentennial plans.
