Lincoln Fire Chief  Jim Davis presented Bret Tripplett with his new helmet at the Feb. 20 city meeting, making him a full-fledged firefighter. Tripplett was hired one year earlier, when he had just turned 21. He earned his Fire Fighter II certificate through six weeks of intensive training at the University of Illinois. While there he maintained a 95.7 grade-point average. He is one of the youngest firemen to join the Lincoln department, Davis said.
It drew a few chuckles when Davis explained that it is customary that firefighters on probationary status wear a bright red helmet that stands out. This is for their safety, so everyone can help keep an eye on them, whether they are on a ladder or in some other risky position. He was pretty sure Tripplett would be glad to replace that helmet with his new helmet that looks like those th
e other firefighters wear.

A proclamation was read earlier this month honoring outgoing Alderman Derrick Crane for his four years of exemplary work on the council. Crane also received special recognition and a fireman’s helmet from Fire Chief Jim Davis in appreciation for his work on the fire committee.
One of Crane’s biggest interests has been economic development. He has been instrumental in the numerous aspects of local development that have taken place during his term. He will continue to contribute to the community as a member of the Logan County Regional Planning Commission.

Returning to the council this spring, representing the 3rd Ward, was David Armbrust. Armbrust had retired from his position only to be appointed two years later. He fills the unexpired term of Darron Whitaker, who needed to attend to family and business matters.

First-time Alderman Jeff Hoinacki, Ward 5, gets tutorial from City Clerk Melanie Riggs as he takes his seat at May 7 meeting.
