Strong south winds expected over central, east central and southeast Illinois Thursday

[June 07, 2007]  A wind advisory is in effect from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday for the counties of Knox, Stark, Peoria, Marshall, Woodford, Fulton, Tazewell, McLean, Schuyler, Mason, Logan, DeWitt, Piatt, Champaign, Vermilion, Cass, Menard, Scott, Morgan, Sangamon, Christian, Macon, Moultrie, Douglas, Coles, Edgar, Shelby, Cumberland, Clark, Effingham, Jasper, Crawford, Clay, Richland and Lawrence, including the cities of Galesburg, Peoria, Bloomington, Normal, Havana, Lincoln, Champaign, Urbana, Danville, Jacksonville, Springfield, Taylorville, Decatur, Charleston, Mattoon, Shelbyville, Effingham, Flora and Lawrenceville.

An intense storm system will push into the Dakotas Thursday morning and then track into southern Canada by Thursday night. South winds are expected to increase to 25 to 35 mph, with occasional gusts up to 50 mph, starting Thursday morning and continuing through the afternoon. The strong and gusty south winds will gradually diminish Thursday evening as a cold front approaches the area.

A wind advisory means that sustained winds of 30 mph are expected, with gusts at least to 45 mph. Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles on east-west roadways. Use extra caution.
