[June 08, 2007]  (AP) Severe thunderstorms were forecast Friday throughout the nation's midsection as a large low-pressure system slowly drifts through the Northern Plains.

Storms were expected to begin in central Kansas and Nebraska in the morning, then push eastward throughout the day, moving into the mid-Mississippi Valley and the Midwest by the afternoon.

Rain was anticipated in the Gulf Coast as a tropical disturbance moves into the region on the first day of the 2007 Atlantic hurricane season. The disturbance was unlikely to develop into a tropical depression.

Clear skies were again forecast for the West.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday ranged from a low of 23 degrees at Berthoud Pass, Colo., to a high of 112 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
