[June 09, 2007]  (AP) Tropical Storm Barry was dumping significant rain on the parched Florida Peninsula on Saturday, while a low-pressure system was expected to bring rain and thunderstorms from the Northern Plains to the Mississippi Valley.

Barry was not expected to strengthen into a hurricane before it makes landfall Saturday evening, though it was to continue producing heavy rain and thunderstorms along the Southeast coast into Sunday. The rain was welcome in Florida, which is facing one of its driest years on record.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms were also forecast for the Northeast. The West was expected to remain mostly dry, although scattered showers were possible from the Northwest through the Great Basin.

The Southwest was expected to rise into the 90s and 100s, while the Northwest and California were to see temperatures from the 60s at the coast to the 90s inland. Parts of the Southern Plains could rise into the 90s, while the Southeast could see temperatures in the 70s and 80s. The Northeast was expected to reach the 70s and 80s.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Friday ranged from a low of 27 degrees at West Yellowstone, Mont., to a high of 114 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
