[March 28, 2007]  CHICAGO -- Statement from Gov. Rod R. Blagojevich on Citizen Action's new poll showing overwhelming public support for new state investments in education and health care:

"Citizen Action's independent survey reinforces the agenda I laid out in my budget address. The people of Illinois rank access to affordable health care and more funding for schools as their top priorities. These two issues very directly impact working and middle-class families as they strive to get ahead. As elected decision-makers, we have an obligation to do everything we can to address the concerns our constituents raise. That means finding the resources to better fund education and to help people get adequate health coverage at prices they can actually afford.

"I hope lawmakers will take these survey findings to heart and work with me to meet the needs of the people of Illinois. We can all agree on the goals, but coming up with the resources is more difficult. New revenue has to come from somewhere, and I've proposed a plan that asks those who are doing the least right now in support of state services to do their part. I know legislators are hearing from the business community and contributors who don't want to pay any more than they already do -- I'm hearing from them too. But Citizen Action's survey shows that people all over Illinois are worried about our schools and being able to get health care -- we can't ask those same people to dig deeper into their pockets. I hope lawmakers will join me in putting the interests of regular people ahead of special interests."
