[May 25, 2007]  (AP) An intense storm forecast to develop off the Mid-Atlantic coast on Friday could cause minor coastal flooding in New Jersey and Long Island.

Heavy rain was expected to move into New England, possibly flooding some rivers. Light rain was forecast for the central Appalachians.

More thunderstorms were expected in the Rockies, with the most intense storms likely to develop in the Southwest. A strong thunderstorm or two could form in West Texas and roll eastward through the state. Storms were also possible in the Northern Plains.

In the West, clear skies were forecast over California and Oregon, although clouds were expected to develop over coastal Washington. Temperatures in the region were to remain cool.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday ranged from a low of 23 degrees at Land O'Lakes, Wis., to a high of 109 degrees at Death Valley, Calif.
