Local man loses life as soldier in Iraq

[May 30, 2007]  The Department of Defense announced the death of a soldier from Lincoln who was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Spc. Francis "Frank" M. Trussel Jr., 21, of Lincoln died Saturday in Tahrir, Iraq. Trussel was wounded when an improvised explosive device detonated near his position. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Trussel leaves behind his wife, Jodi, and two sons, ages 2 and 4. He was living in Lincoln in 2006 when he entered the Army.

Trussel grew up east of Lincoln. Frank and his two siblings, Jesse and Heather, entered foster care when his mother died when he was age 2. His sister died in childhood in an accident.

Trussel enjoyed playing sports in his youth, particularly basketball, and graduated from DeLand-Weldon High School in 2003. He attended college in Lincoln in 2004 and joined the Army in 2005. He deployed for Iraq in October 2006.
