Alcohol Cited in Fatal Crash near Morrisonville

[November 06, 2007]  SPRINGFIELD -- An early morning crash claimed the life of a Litchfield man on Monday. Dewey K. Welter, 38, was a passenger in the single-vehicle incident that occurred south of Taylorville near Morrisonville at 1:50 a.m.

According to an Illinois State Police report, the driver, Charity Jackson-Whitted, 36, of Wapella, was traveling eastbound on Illinois Route 48 near Christian County Road 400N in a silver 2000 Mercury Cougar. She drove off the roadway partially onto the right gravel shoulder. As she re-entered the roadway, she failed to maintain control of the vehicle and it began to rotate clockwise. The vehicle traveled off the roadway into the right ditch area, struck an embankment, drove over the embankment and rolled over in the ditch area. The vehicle came to rest upright and became fully engulfed in fire.

Welter, Jackson-Whitted and another passenger, Jeffrey J. Wagahoff, were all ejected from the vehicle.

Jackson-Whitted and Wagahoff were transported to St. John's Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Weller was pronounced dead at the scene.

Jackson-Whitted was cited for aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence of alcohol, improper lane usage, failure to wear a seat belt and operating an uninsured vehicle.

The circumstances of the crash remain under investigation.

The public is reminded that anyone is presumed innocent until charges are proven in a court of law.
