Man Dies in Route 29 Backhoe-Van Crash

[November 08, 2007]  SPRINGFIELD -- An unnamed 29-year-old male from Edinburg died after his vehicle struck a backhoe and left the roadway on Wednesday at approximately 8:55 a.m. The victim was driving a white 2003 Chevrolet Express van northbound on Illinois Route 29, a quarter-mile south of Interstate 55.

The Chevrolet Express van struck the rear of a yellow 1998 John Deere backhoe driven by Robert J. Wood II, 24, of Springfield. Wood was driving in the right-hand lane of Route 29.

The van traveled into the right-hand ditch area and came to rest.

The driver of the van was extricated by Springfield Fire Department and transported by America Ambulance to St. John's Hospital. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Wood was not injured.

Assisting agencies: Secretary of State Police, Springfield Fire Department, America Ambulance, Illinois Department of Transportation.

The circumstances of the crash remain under investigation.
